Deschutes and Crooked River Fly Fishing Reports

Crooked River: 224 CFS

The Crooked River is fishing decent, though it is a bit of a transition time on the river.
Caddis are prevalent now, with some good dry fly fishing most days. Nymphing is producing as well.
Look for PMD's starting to show in good numbers soon. We have seen a few out there already, once this hatch gets rolling you can expect it like clock work in the afternoon for the rest of the summer.

ODFW is doing it's annual fish count survey from Big Bend to Cobble Rock. As they electrocute, and count everything that swims in the river fishing in this section of the river will be off during that time 6/16-6/20, and usually for a few day afterwords as well.

The river opened to bait fishing Memorial Weekend and as a result there is a new, different pressure on the river, with some harvesting going on. It is hard to believe ODFW allows bait fishing on one of the best wild trout fisheries in the state, but they do:( The fishery seems to maintain in the face of the pressure, but it sure is sad to seem worm containers, and dead fish on the banks from bait fisherman up sizing there catch. They are only allowed two fish a day, so if they reach there limit they are done. Though we have not witnessed first hand, we have seen fish on the banks left in exchange for something bigger caught later... If you see anyone doing this, or exceeding their two fish limit, get a discription of them and their vehicle if possible, and call the poacher hotline at 1-800-452-7888.

Deschutes River: 4200 CFS

The Salmonfly hatch is all but a distant memory now. Fishing is good though, with the fish and fishing transitioning to the Caddis Hatch. Fish have move up onto the riffles to feed and dry and dry dropper action has produced in the areas. Back eddies can also be good places to target fish on the surface this time of year as they lazily sip dead, spent bugs that are collect in the eddies. This is some of the more technical fishing you will find on the Deschutes, with stealth, longer leaders, and good presentations making the difference between success and failure.

We still have availability for day and overnight camp trips on the Deschutes this season. July is one of my favorite months to be on the river.

Fishing is still good and the angling pressure is a bit lighter after the Salmonfly craziness. Warm temps equal wet wading, and caddis fly swarms and some great dry fly fishing!
Camping is exquisite with warm summer evenings and long days and river to always cool off in.

Deschutes and Crooked River Fly Fishing Reports

Deschutes River:

4350 CFS

The Deschutes Salmonfly hatch is going on now! Fishing is good as result. The hatch seems a bit light this year, but there are enough bug to get the fish looking up! We are seeing more bugs and bigger fish from Whitehorse upsteam, though there are bugs (though fewer) and good fishing still down river to Maupin. To target fish eating the Salmonflies focus on rip rap banks, and behind alders, and along bank lines. Fish big Chubby Chernobyls (Sz.8) in the heavy water on the rip rap, try smaller patterns like the Clark Stone in the calmer spots behind the trees and along the banks. Fish are getting pressured now so switch up your patterns and lighten your leaders if your getting refusals.

We are also picking up fish in back eddies and feeding lanes on small PMDs and X-Caddis patterns.

I expect the fishing to be good for another week or two on the big bugs and then transition to caddis after that. Last year we had great caddis fishing in late June and July.

Crooked River:
246 CFS

The Crooked continues to fish great! The Mothers Day Caddis (Grannoms) are out and fish are taking dry flies on the surface most of the day. The peak caddis activity though is in the afternoon.

We fish a lot of dry-dropper set ups this time of year. With a hi viz Brown or Black Caddis on point, with a small PT or Caddis Pupae pattern as a dropper. Fish are picked up on both through out the day.

Redside trout continue to spawn this month.  Watch out and stay away from any spawning beds you see or you think you see. There is a huge problem on the Crooked with people actually fishing Redds (trout spawning beds). We see people, accidentally and sometimes not, fishing or walking through   Redds all the time. This is just plan wrong! Keep an eye out for and stay off any gravel that is 1" or less in diameter. Redds can be identified is these areas and are usually lighter in color than the surrounding gravel. Any fish seen with in these areas are most likely in the act of spawning.

Crooked and Deschutes River Fly Fishing Reports

Crooked River :
 373 CFS

The spring water release from Prineville Reservoir is currently happening, though it is going to be a short event this season. Water levels have topped out and are already on the drop. People have been fishing through out the high water, and catching some fish! Look for fishing to be good and only get better as the river gets below 200 cfs. Expect some hatches of Blue Wings and some midges right now, and soon we will start to see some caddis. The Mothers Day Caddis come off strong in this river in the spring making for some great dry fly fishing...

Lower Deschutes River :
4700 CFS

The section of river bordering the Warm Springs Indian Reservation is still closed but opens up on April 26th. The river level is nice for this time of year. Fishing is good on March Browns and Blue Wing Olives. If the weather stays mild I predict the Salmonfly hatch will  come off early again this year. Look for the second week in May,  on to be good.

Redd Alert!
Our Rainbows are on the spawn from now until early summer in both the Crooked and Deschutes Rivers. Keep and eye out and stay off of gravel bars. Focus more on dry fly fishing or dry-dropper techniques which will keep you away from spawners that are on the bottom. Land your fish quickly, revive adequately, and handle with care. Lets take care of this precious resource!
